§What is a referral code

guide

published on · last reviewed:

A referral code is a personal code or link that a company assigns to each user so that they can invite new people. When someone signs up with it, the company rewards both sides: the person who invites and the person who accepts the invitation. It is also called a friend code, and the double-reward mechanic, "give-get". A real example: with the Glovo referral, whoever signs up with it gets free delivery on their first orders.

How it differs from a coupon

They look alike because both are typed into a box at checkout, but they are not the same thing. A coupon is issued by the store for anyone and takes money off the price. A referral belongs to one specific person, and its reward usually arrives afterwards, once you have done something.

And from an affiliate link

This is the difference people confuse most. With an affiliate link, the person recommending earns a commission from the store and you gain nothing by using it: it costs you the same as if you had come in on your own. With a referral, the company shares out the reward and part of it is for you. That is why there are no affiliate links on this website: the personal links we publish are referrals, they all sit together under our own referrals, carry the #referido tag, and on each store page we tell you what you get.

How to use one, step by step

  • Open the link or copy the code before creating the account.
  • Sign up as a new user: most programmes do not accept existing accounts.
  • Paste the code in the referral code or "friend code" box. It is usually different from the coupon box, and that is the most common mistake.
  • Complete it before finishing the payment: almost no programme applies it afterwards.
  • Meet whatever condition the campaign requires (first purchase, minimum spend, staying subscribed) and wait for the reward.

What you get, with real examples

It depends on the programme. These are cases we have published and verified:

  • Glovo: free delivery on the first orders.
  • Tesla: Supercharging credits or Tesla Credits when you buy a new Model 3 or Model Y.
  • Saily: a fixed discount on the first purchase, only on plans above a minimum.
  • Banks and neobanks: money after meeting a condition, such as a purchase or a payroll deposit.

The small print worth reading

Three warnings. First: almost all referrals are for new users only of the service. Second: the reward is rarely immediate, and the condition that releases it is written in the conditions on each store page — read it before you sign up. And third: referral conditions change more oftenthan those of an ordinary coupon, so we review them frequently and the date of the last review is in plain view on each offer; if it looks old, it is.

A security note: a legitimate referral is always applied inside the service's official website or app. They should never ask you for details outside it, and nobody should charge you for a code — referrals are free. If one of ours does not work, tell us with the "not working?" button on its store page and we will check it.

The referrals we do not publish, and why

Not every referral can be published. Some programmes expressly forbid sharing the code on coupon websites, and others promise more in the invitation than their own terms say. When that happens, we do not publish it or we withdraw it, and we explain why with the literal quotation and the date underwithdrawn promotions.

§Frequently asked questions

What is a referral code?

A referral code is a personal code or link that a company assigns to each user so that they can invite new people. When someone signs up with it, the company rewards both sides: the person who invites and the person who accepts the invitation. That is why it is also called a friend code or a "give-get" mechanic.

How does a referral code differ from a discount coupon?

The coupon is issued by the store for anyone and is usually a discount on the price. A referral code belongs to one specific user, almost always works only for new customers, and the reward often arrives after meeting a condition (a first purchase, a top-up, keeping the account for a while) rather than straight away.

Is a referral code the same as an affiliate link?

No. With an affiliate link, the person recommending earns a commission from the store and you gain nothing by using it. With a referral, the reward is shared: part of what the company pays goes to the person who accepts the invitation. We do not use affiliate links on this website.

When do I receive the reward from a referral?

It depends on the programme and is almost never immediate. It is usually released once you complete the action the campaign asks for: the first purchase, a minimum spend or a period of staying subscribed. The exact condition is always written in the conditions on each store page.

What should I do if the referral code does not apply?

Check three things: that the account is new to that service (most only accept new users), that the code goes in the referral code box and not the coupon one, and that you enter it before finishing the payment, because almost no programme applies it afterwards. If it still fails, tell us with the "not working?" button on the store page.

What does a referral code look like? An example

It is usually a short string of letters and numbers, such as AMIGO2026 or XK7P4Q, or a link that already contains it, such as tienda.com/invitar/XK7P4Q. You type it into the "referral code" box when you sign up, or open the link before creating the account. Real examples, with their conditions and verification date, are in the referrals section.

What is a referral number or referral ID?

It is the same concept under another name. Depending on the programme it is called a referral code, friend code, referral number, recommendation ID or invitation code: they all identify the person who is inviting so that the company knows whom to reward.

Is it safe to use a referral code?

Yes, as long as the company itself applies the code within its own sign-up or checkout process. A referral should never ask you for details outside the service's official website or app. Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay for a code: referrals are free.
